In June 2008 much of Eastern Iowa and surrounding areas were devastated by floods. Columbus Junction, which lies at the conflux of the Cedar and Iowa Rivers, was one of many communities that battled rising rivers and in the end lost. Fortunately few homes were destroyed as residential areas tend to be located on higher ground. Over two dozen businesses however, were directly affected, most of which were able to clean up, repair and reopen within months. Throughout the process, from sandbagging to serving on the governor's Rebuild Iowa Commission, Columbus Junction residents have proudly and wholehearted supported their community. We have new appreciation for the value of volunteering and helping one another and in this spirit hope to make Columbus Junction better than before.

The photos below show some of the events of June 2008. For more information please contact the Community Development Center.
