Making and Keeping Columbus Junction Beautiful

The Keep Columbus Beautiful Committee has ambitious plans for this new organization in its first year of event planning.  With assistance from nine students from the University of Iowa’s graduate program in Urban and Regional Planning the group is promoting clean up of homes, businesses, parks and roadways from April 17 through April 24 as well as Beautification Days from May 22 to May 30.

U of I Planning students were presented with a class assignment to work in groups to help communities to be greener and more sustainable.  Columbus Junction was selected as a project site along with Anamosa, Decorah and Wellman. The Columbus Junction team was challenged to come up with events and programs that could be held annually.  A plan was developed around Earth Day (April 22) and leading up to the traditional Citywide Clean up which will be held this year on Friday, April 23.

On the weekend of April 17 and 18, residents and business people are encouraged to clean and organize their garages and tidy up their yards. Monday, April 19 is designated as Clean Your Closets and Bedrooms Day. Excess clothing and bedding in good shape can be consigned locally at Gips or donated to the clothes closet at CJ United Methodist Church. On Tuesday, April 20 residents are urged to clean their kitchen cupboards, pantries, bathroom cupboards and laundry rooms. Excess newer items in original packaging can be donated to Community Action to pass on to families in need. Other items will be good candidates for….Wednesday, April 21’s household hazardous waste pick up. From noon until 7:00 pm on this day only Keep Columbus Beautiful volunteers, in collaboration with the Muscatine Recycling Center and Transfer Station, will provide a place for residents (not businesses) to bring things that should not be disposed of with the garbage. Friday is the Citywide clean up. Hopefully by the end of the week people have recycled, consigned, donated and brought things to household hazardous waste pick up site so that there is less to pick up than ever before!

Beautification Days, May 22 to 30, are designated to help residents and business owners to identify problem areas and opportunities in their building and outdoor areas and to make improvements that make them more attractive and livable.
